The Atkins diet basically suggests a strict restriction on the intake of the processed carbohydrates along with a limited or no intake of breads, sugary foods, pastas and almost all the starch vegetables. The concept of Dr. Atkins on the Atkins diet is based on the belief that people are overweight because of the extra consumption and the hypersensitivity towards carbohydrates. For a detailed analysis of Dr. Atkins approach on the matter, there are various websites on the Internet that offers a copy of Atkins diet plan.

As opposed to various other traditional diets, the Atkin diet completely ignores the effect that fat can have on the human body and firmly believes in the fact that it is merely carbohydrates that are actually the key for weight loss, if we do not count fat grams. Though Atkins diet may prove to be effective to reduce weight, but it is not accepted by the doctors. This is because, Atkins diet are not really accepted in terms of medical opinion when checked for a healthy body or heart. Therefore, it will never be recommended by a doctor for sure.

There are a series of diet books by Dr. Atkins that gives in-depth knowledge as regards to his diet plan that marked a revolution with his Atkins diet. He also explained that the intake of carbohydrate in the initial two weeks of Atkins diet is limited to 20 gms per day. That is to say, the fat and the protein diet will definitely form most of the diet of an individual following Atkins diet. To avert any of the deficiencies that may result due to the mineral and vitamin deficiencies in this period, there are mineral and vitamin supplements that form an important part of their diet as well.

After the starting two weeks, the intake of carbohydrates is increased gradually until the dieter reaches a level when he starts losing weight slowly and is able to reduce or eradicate supplements.
